Rolls-Royce Motor Cars honored the 120th anniversary of the historic meeting of its founders, The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls and Henry Royce, with a showcase of some of its most iconic models at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on 25 May 2024. Additionally, Rolls-Royce chose this moment for the global debut of Cullinan Series II, an audacious evolution of the world’s top super-luxury SUV, on the renowned Mosaic Lawn of the Grand Hotel.
Building on the outstanding success of the first-generation Cullinan globally, which revolutionized super-luxury motoring upon its release in 2018, the Series II model reaffirms the brand’s steadfast commitment to Sir Henry Royce’s famous maxim: “Take the best that exists and make it better”.
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este boasts a distinguished and longstanding legacy. Since its inception in 1929, it has become one of the most prestigious and pivotal events in the international lifestyle calendar. Hosted in the exquisite setting of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como, it serves as a global platform for classic and vintage cars, making it the ideal setting to pay tribute to a select group of models that contributed to building Rolls-Royce’s reputation.

Attendees and members of the media from around the globe enjoyed a display of some of the most renowned models from the brand’s illustrious history. This unique collection of pioneering Rolls-Royce motor cars featured a 1914 Silver Ghost, celebrated for its performances in the early 20th Century’s great motor trials. Also showcased was a Phantom III; a groundbreaking feat of engineering at its launch in 1936, which inspired the naming of Rolls-Royce’s first all-electric vehicle, Spectre, as ten experimental Phantom III motor cars bore that name from 1934 to 1937. The parade concluded with a 40/50 H.P. Silver Ghost produced at the company’s facility in Springfield Massachusetts in 1923, a rare 1933 Phantom II Continental, and an exemplary 1961 long-wheelbase Silver Cloud II. Amongst this array of era-defining Rolls-Royces, a panel of judges selected the 1914 Silver Ghost as the standout car of the parade; another triumph for the initial model that earned Rolls-Royce the nickname of ‘the best car in the world’.
The procession of Rolls-Royce motor cars, past and present, served as a testament to the enduring legacy established by the brand’s founders, The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls and Henry Royce. Together, these visionaries left behind a lineage of motor cars that continue to set the standard in super-luxury motoring worldwide. It has been 120 years since the first encounter of these motoring pioneers at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, and their legacy endures through the company they established.
