The ADAC put the battery through rigorous testing. In order to reach the 100,000 kilometer milestone quickly, the ID.3 was frequently charged to full capacity at fast charging stations. Despite recommendations, the vehicle was left at the charging station with a full charge for the next tester, sometimes for several days.
This endurance test marks a first for the ID. family of vehicles. Between test drives, engineers at the Landsberg am Lech Test and Technical Center continuously monitored and inspected the ID.3. The ADAC evaluated eight main criteria and over 300 sub-criteria, covering technology, safety, handling, ease of use, and environmental impact.
Customers are advised by the ADAC to always install software updates. Throughout the endurance test, the ID.3 underwent multiple software updates. These updates not only addressed various bugs but also increased the charging power to 170 kW. Additionally, the updates improved energy consumption and overall range, especially in short distances and winter conditions between 0 to 5° C.
The ADAC testers praised the Intelligent Electric Vehicle Route Planner, which was included in one of the updates for the ID.3. This feature plans charging stops efficiently for longer journeys, prioritizing faster route completion. Taking into account the battery’s charge level, current traffic conditions, and forecasts, the system dynamically evaluates charging stops and recommends short stops with high power output over long stops with lower power.
