The eMotionRoom is a component of the eMotionDay, a training program for production staff in Wolfsburg scheduled until 2025. This autumn, Wolfsburg will kick off production of the successful ID.3 model, the first model at the plant to utilize the modular electric drive (MEB) platform. By summer, about 1,200 employees will have received training in ID.3 production.
“Volkswagen is continuously developing innovative training approaches as we progress toward becoming a provider of sustainable and software-focused mobility. These approaches are crucial for our successful transformation in an increasingly digital world,” Gunnar Kilian, Board Member for Human Resources, stressed during the eMotionRoom inauguration. “Volkswagen has launched a comprehensive retraining campaign at its German sites, with escape rooms playing a significant role in this initiative. Following Zwickau and Emden, we are now extending this successful concept to our largest plant here in Wolfsburg.
Gerardo Scarpino, Deputy Chairman of the General Works Council, remarked: “The eMotionRoom concept garnered positive feedback from our Zwickau employees. The concept was well-received, prompting its introduction in Wolfsburg as well. Embracing e-mobility is a collective effort with our colleagues. Engaging, inspiring, and training them are vital for our joint success as we navigate this transformative journey together. The eMotionRoom is a crucial piece of this puzzle.”
The Volkswagen Group Academy and the plant’s organizational units collaborated to create the eMotionRoom in Wolfsburg. It features three intricately designed rooms where employees must solve puzzles and challenges within a 20-minute timeframe. The experience includes a historical journey to the invention of the first electric motors, a glimpse into the Wolfsburg location’s evolution to the present day, and an exploration of the future of digital driving.

Teams comprising four members must solve diverse challenges in each room to progress. Guided by two instructors via video link, the eMotionRoom is part of the comprehensive eMotionDay training that includes VR headset utilization in production. The eMotionRoom will remain operational until at least the end of 2024.
Christian Vollmer, Volkswagen Brand Board of Management Member for Production and Logistics, emphasized the fundamental transformation of car manufacturing in Germany as the Wolfsburg plant transitions to e-mobility within the brand’s German production network. The plant will continue to produce ICE vehicles alongside electric models, posing a unique integration challenge.
Subassembly of the ID.3 will commence at the Wolfsburg plant this fall, with full production slated for mid-2024. The implementation of a new production line enables flexibility to build both MEB and ICE vehicles concurrently, positioning Wolfsburg as Volkswagen’s first multi-platform factory with the future SSP platform.
Rainer Fessel, Plant Manager, underscored the strategic investment in the new production line, emphasizing the safeguarding of jobs and capacity utilization at the Wolfsburg plant over the next decade. An initial investment of €460 million through early 2025 will facilitate the production of the ID.3 and the new Tiguan model, alongside retraining initiatives like the eMotionRoom.
Furthermore, the Wolfsburg factory is set to introduce a new MEB-based SUV model in the near future, solidifying its position as the “heart of the VW brand” in the coming years.
