Two decades have passed since the VW bus bid farewell to the American and Canadian markets with the T4 generation. Despite this, the vehicle still maintains a devoted following from coast to coast, from New York to San Francisco. In 2023, the rear-engine T1, T2, and T3 generations continue to grace the beach parking lots of California, Florida, and Long Island. Volkswagen is now reconnecting with its roots by reintroducing the VW bus to North America through the ID. Buzz, featuring a long wheelbase and electric rear-wheel drive. Thomas Schäfer, a Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, Brand Group Volume, expressed his enthusiasm for this revival: “Volkswagen is a powerhouse global brand with a rich history, millions of dedicated fans, and iconic products. The overwhelming support for the brand is evident here at the largest VW Bus festival in the USA. I am thrilled that the team at Volkswagen Group of America is unveiling the ID. Buzz with a long wheelbase here. This model marks a significant step towards reclaiming our status as a beloved brand.” Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America, emphasized the significance of the electric VW bus for the American market: “The ID. Buzz and the USA are a match made in heaven! The VW bus has a storied past in the USA and holds a special place in the hearts of many. Today, our goal is to build on the strong foundation of the Volkswagen brand in America. The ID. Buzz with a long wheelbase is perfectly suited to achieve this objective.” Lars Krause, a Member of the Board of Management responsible for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, described the ID. Buzz as a resurgence of a particular automotive lifestyle: “The VW bus has embodied a distinct way of life in the USA, Canada, and Europe for generations. The image of the iconic T1 Lightbus at Woodstock remains etched in our memories. The essence of freedom and individuality associated with this vehicle lives on in our ID. Buzz. It is a priority for us to offer the people of North America a contemporary, all-electric reimagining of this classic in an unmistakable design.”
